The Marangu Route is a popular tourist route for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is also known as the “Coca-Cola” route due to the availability of the beverage along the way. It is the only route that provides accommodation in huts, making it a good option for those who prefer not to camp. However, the route is also known for being crowded and having a lower success rate compared to other routes due to its shorter duration and steeper ascent. Despite this, the Marangu Route still offers stunning views of the mountain and its surrounding landscapes.
You’ll arrive in Moshi, Tanzania and transfer to your hotel. Your guide will conduct a briefing about the trek and ensure you have all the necessary gear.
After breakfast, you’ll be picked up and transferred to the Marangu Gate. You’ll complete registration formalities and meet the rest of the trekking crew. The trek begins with a 3-4 hour walk through the forest to Mandara Hut, where you’ll have dinner and stay overnight.
After breakfast, you’ll leave Mandara Hut and trek through the heathland and moorland towards Horombo Hut. The trek takes approximately 6-7 hours, and you’ll have lunch on the way. You’ll arrive at Horombo Hut in the late afternoon, have dinner, and stay overnight.
To help your body acclimatize to the altitude, you’ll spend the day resting and exploring the surrounding area. You can take a short trek to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge, which will help you to acclimate and also provide stunning views.
After breakfast, you’ll leave Horombo Hut and trek towards Kibo Hut. The trek takes approximately 6-7 hours and passes through the alpine desert. You’ll have lunch on the way, and then continue the climb to Kibo Hut. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut in the late afternoon, have an early dinner and rest before the summit attempt.
You’ll be woken up around midnight to start the summit attempt. The climb takes approximately 6-7 hours to reach Gillman’s Point (5,681m) and another 1-2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. After taking in the stunning views and photos, you’ll then begin the descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest, you’ll continue the descent to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, you’ll leave Horombo Hut and trek down through the moorland and forest to the Marangu Gate. After completing exit formalities, you’ll transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower and rest.
